Today, SMILE #UWokeUp competed in the Yeti Chase 5K, put on by Racing Underground, to raise awareness of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) to our communities. We were so blessed to have this opportunity to share SMILE #UWokeUp mission with others, while running and showing the world that we are capable of overcoming our challenges.
Almost five years ago, March 30, 2012, I had an accident in my home and sustained a traumatic brain injury myself. Three weeks ago, I was in my first car accident in 26.5 years. Nothing physically damaging happened, but I sustained bad whiplash and an achy back. Emotionally I was torn apart. It brought everything back from Craig Hospital, even memories that I try and forget. It reminded me of what brings me happiness while living in the present moment. Doing things that bring me love and joy, not just a paycheck.
Today was my “first” of many things. The biggest one being my first time doing physical fitness since January 4, when I sustained a car accident. Racing today, made me think back to when I took my first eight steps between parallel bars in Craig Hospital. I felt the same pure bliss that I did on my first day I walked after I woke up from a coma, reminding me how grateful I am to be here. To have the opportunity to not only walk, but race, is huge hopefully inspiring someone to not give up on what that are battling. This is my hope and my “why” on why I continue.
