Today, Saturday, February 4th, SMILE #UWokeUp held its first Board of Director meeting. We could have not asked for a better first meeting. There was so much support from complete strangers, with me as the exception, that amplified the love that was sitting around the table. I was in awe the whole time – as a new CEO, I’m still trying to catch my breath.
I want to say thank you to the Board for such a such an amazing and inspiring meeting. With this team, anything is possible. We were able to make a game plan and to schedule a few more meetings. We have big goals and when the board gathers again in a month, I hope to have more profound updates.
Tomorrow, Sunday, February 5 – Super Bowl. Will be one of the biggest days for me Molly Cain, after the accident that changed my life. March 30, 2012, I was training for the Horsetooth Half-Marathon in Fort Collins. I ran the course – 13.1 miles, a couple days before I took a fall that changed my world where I ended up in a coma, with the right side of my body paralyzed. As an athlete I fought and fought to regain ability, and I still fight daily to strengthen different pathways in the brain and my muscles. However, with a TBI, time is all that you have.
At 5AM, I have to be in Arvada for the Ralston Creek Half Marathon. This will be my fourth year helping out with the race, but this will be my first time participating as an athlete. This will be my first half-marathon and another hurdle to jump over and cross off my list. An emotional day will be had , while I spread our message and mission with other: traumatic brain injury awareness.
I have been asked, “How is training?” Well, the answer depends on your interpretation of training. A month ago, I was in my first car accident where I was hit from behind by an F-350. This caused major back issues and I was out of work for over a week, with a work restriction, and out of the gym with any physical activity for three weeks. I am confident that I will finish strong. I am confident that I will not be the first woman to cross the finish line. I am confident that I will have a smile sprung on my face throughout. I am confident that I will encourage others. And I am confident that this is exactly what my purpose is, spreading awareness, representing my TBI family.
Life is full of many surprises, friends, and we are the ones who decide how we are going to react to the curve balls thrown, which we have no control over. Get ready to hit the ball out of the park, I am.
